Over the past few years, we have had many requests for special classes to teach how to etch larger pieces of glass. Even though the basic techniques are the same as for etching smaller to mid-size pieces of glass, the scale is so much larger, it's like a different business. These are all things you will learn on your own over the course of being in the glass etching business for 5 to 15 years, but some people just don't want to wait!

So, we are announcing a brand new class - How to Etch Architectural Glass. This includes any large scale glass, such as in front doors, shower enclosures, room dividers, large table tops and other large pieces of glass! In creating this class, we realized just how much we have learned over the years and have taken for granted. As a result, we have created a very thorough class for those who want to skip the 5 -15 year learning curve mentioned above.

Entering the world of architectural size glass requires specific knowledge of what equipment setup is necessary, how to order and handle architectural glass, building code and legal aspects and installation considerations. This class is designed to help you understand the various aspects of architectural blasting and to be able to enter this line of business with confidence.

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to use two different pass-through cabinets
  • How to etch in a blast room
  • Essentials of building a blast room, including blasters, vacuum exhaust systems, the safety gear and easels for large glass
  • How to choose the right type of glass for the job. For example: What type of glass do you use if your client wants a carved design on a door panel?
  • How to order larger glass including safety glass, the proper type of edge finishing, the thickness of the glass related to its overall size, how to calculate the weight of the glass
  • How to handle larger pieces of glass
  • How to order stencils for large glass
  • How to apply stencils to large glass
  • How to apply resist and transfer a design if you are not using a pre-cut stencil
  • How to etch tempered glass and safety glass
  • Installation considerations and why you will probably want to hire that part of the job out
  • . . . even how to crate and ship finished etched glass!

Students will be creating their own full sized "showroom samples" during the class and will be able to complete projects worth up to $2400!

Fascinating field trips will be included. We are currently planning field trips to a glass tempering plant and a waterjet cutting facility.

In order to get as much as possible out of the class, you should either have experience with carving and shading or you should first take our 4 day Professional Glass Etching Seminar.

There is no other class of this type anywhere - don't miss it!

This is the most in-depth etching class we have, and one of the longest, but you can base an entire business on it!

Double doors with full sized glass panel inserts.

Frameless glass table top featuring 3/4" glass with flat polished edges.
